Determining Your Cause Of Toothache

Determining the cause of a toothache is a pressing matter, especially when you are the one in pain.  You must identify the cause in order to treat the aching tooth.  There are a number of causes of toothaches, among the more common are tooth decay and tooth sensitivity.

Head colds and inner ear infections can contribute to a toothache.  Extreme pressure in the head filters down to the jaw line.  This is experienced as a toothache.  Sometimes, a toothache may be the first indication that a head cold or sinus problem is coming on.

Often, kids that do a lot of swimming during the summer inadvertently allow large amounts of water into their ear canals.  This water can remain in place, and lead to an ear infection.  It could also result in a toothache.  Prevent this common problem by requiring your children to wear ear plugs when they go in the water.

Once you think you have found the cause of your toothache, it is time to figure out the best means of treating it.  The most reasonable step is to call the dentist for an appointment.  The dentist can take a look at your teeth and gums and recommend the most suitable treatment.

Prior to your appointment, you may want to ask the dental assistant for suggestions to help deal with the pain until you see the dentist.  It is likely that the assistant will recommend a numbing cream or gel and a mild pain reliever.  This simple home remedy for toothache is only until you can see your doctor. These will work temporarily, so do not cancel your dental appointment when you feel a little relief.  You’re toothache will likely return.

There are a few other things you can do to help yourself until it is time to see the dentist.  One, avoid cold foods and drink cold liquids through a straw.  Extreme temperatures can aggravate your toothache.  Another thing you may have to do is give up food that requires a lot of chewing, especially depending on where the hurting tooth is located.  Take heart, that in time your toothache will be treated and the pain will go away.
